PROPOSALS for a 5G telecommunications mast on a ‘dangerous junction’ in Lymm have been rejected.

Five applications for masts and monopoles came before the council’s development management committee at its Town Hall meeting on Wednesday.

In relation to masts, ahead of the first application being discussed, committee chair Cllr Steve Parish said: “I think we’re going to have a few of these over the weeks and months to come, but we’ll see.”

The council’s planning team told committee members each of the applications were ‘prior approval’ applications and not full planning applications.

They were also informed that the installation of electronic telecommunications apparatus, of many different types, can be carried out as permitted development.

An officer confirmed that in the case of masts and associated works, if the proposed installations meet the requirements of permitted development, then in some cases in order to comply with the requirements of permitted development the applicant is required to submit proposals to the council to see if it would require prior approval.

The first application was for a proposed 5G telecommunications mast on land at Yew Tree Farm, on Bold Lane.

The scheme comprised a 20m high street pole, wraparound cabinet and three further additional equipment cabinets.

The recommendation from officers was for prior approval to be required and to be granted. The committee voted in favour of this recommendation.

The second application was for a proposed 5G telecommunications mast on High Legh Road in Lymm.

The recommendation from officers was for prior approval to be required and to be refused. The committee voted in favour of the recommendation.

Cllr Bob Barr said he thinks the officers ‘have got this one absolutely right’.

He added: “It’s quite a dangerous junction and actually there have been fatal accidents at that junction on more than one occasion – and the additional visual distraction of suddenly having a set of cabinets and a massive mast on that corner will not help.”

The committee also voted on proposals for a 15m monopole on Longwood Road in Appleton and a 15m monopole on Liverpool Road in Great Sankey.

The recommendations for both were for prior approval to be required and refused. The committee voted in favour of these recommendations for the two applications.

The committee also voted on plans for a 20m monopole on Gainsborough Road.

The recommendation was for prior approval to be required and be granted. The committee voted in favour of the recommendation.
