A CHURCH in Penketh are hosting an event in a bid to create a ‘real meaningful’ partnership with schools in the area.

St Joseph’s RC Church launched a banner competition which involved the pupils from local catholic schools, St Gregory’s Catholic High School, St Vincent’s Catholic Primary School and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, creating a banner which would be professionally manufactured and put in a prominent place in the church.

In February, the pupils were given themes to design the banners around; hope for the future, friendship and unity and love and action.

The winners were chosen at the end of the summer term and the banners will be unveiled at an event in October which will be attended by bishop Thomas Neylon.

Joan Williams, vice chair of St Joseph Parish Council, said: “We felt that the banner competition would ensure the pupils would gain knowledge about what the church has to offer and attend more regularly.

“We thought it was a unique opportunity to get staff and pupils involved in the creation and for it to take a place of pride in our church.”

The parish council staff were ‘overwhelmed’ by the competition entries with almost every pupil in the two primary schools creating a banner.

The unveiling will take place on October 13, beginning with VIPs meeting the bishop at 6pm, mass at 7pm and the unveiling at 7:45pm – followed by a buffet afterwards where prizes will be presented.
