PLANS to build a new block of flats near a major junction in the town centre have been scrapped.
An application for planning permission submitted to Warrington Borough Council had sought consent for the development on Church Street.
The three apartments would have been constructed on land near to the roundabout with Fennel Street and Mersey Street, behind existing retail units, under the scheme.
But WBC conservation officers objected to the proposals due to a lack of detail in the submission, while the council’s highways departments also opposed the plans over parking issues.
Cllr Tony Higgins, who lodged a formal objection on the grounds of overdevelopment and traffic, said: “This planning application is made from pure greed – to build as much in a small, confined area that isn’t appropriate for such a development.”
Meanwhile, Cllr Jean Flaherty’s objection added: “This is overdevelopment on a very small site in an area where there are already serious issues with parking and vehicular access.”
And the developer formally withdrawn the application on Thursday, July 29.
Submission documents had stated: “The proposal is in support of a planning application for a small development, incorporating three one-bed apartments.
“The design is for a good quality contemporary building, sympathetic with the existing streetscape with spacious desirable residential accommodation.
“The site offers an opportunity to provide a modern, energy efficient building which will be a complimentary addition to the distinct existing character of the Church Street area.
“This is a highly sustainable location, with all shopping and everyday needs available within easy walking distance.
“The site appears to be left vacant by the demolition of four terraced properties.
“It takes a prominent position at the beginning of Church Street
“The Church Street elevation has been designed to be fresh and contemporary whilst respecting the existing character of the area.”
