THE Co-op has launched an investigation after a customer found ‘blood’ in a meal deal sandwich.
Shopper Mark Ashwin made the alarming discovery in a pre-packaged tuna sandwich bought from the store on Kingsway South in Latchford on Tuesday, July 13.
He noticed the mystery red mark on the bread after eating the first half of his butty.
Mark said: “I ate the first half, then picked up the second and noticed the red mark.
“It looks like blood.
“I am concerned have I caught something – I will need to get checked out.
“Customer care offered me a £40 gift card as an apology, but what good is an apology if I have contracted hepatitis?”
The Co-op has confirmed that is investigating the issue, and has issued a product recall as a ‘precaution’.
A spokesman said: said: “Food safety is our priority and we are in direct contact with the customer.
“We have immediately started an investigation with our supplier into what we believe to be an isolated incident, and as precautionary measure, have recalled the product from shops in liaison with the Food Standards Agency.”
The recall apples to all Co-op tuna sandwiches with a use-by date of July 15.
