The history of walking day dates back to the 19th century.

It started in the 1830s when the church set it up as a riposte to the debauchery of the Newton races.

There were originally different routes for the Catholic and Church of England faiths but now all groups walk along the same paths.

Organisers have said the event will return bigger and better in 2022.

The only other time it was cancelled was during the war.
