CARTOONS and caricatures formed a major part of the Warrington Guardian's sports coverage in the 1930s.

The cartoonists "Pennington" - who worked for the paper in 1934 and 1935 - and Gordon Roylance, who succeeded him, were masters of their craft.

Their work will feature in a new book "So Close To Glory" by former Warrington Guardian journalists Eddie Fuller and Gary Slater and which will be published by London League Publications in March.

The authors are trying to find out more about the two cartoonists and are asking readers for their help (use the comment link adjacent).

The cartoon shown here by Gordon Roylance was first published in the Warrington Guardian on January 15, 1938 - 70 years ago - and records Warrington's 14-11 victory over Wigan at Wilderspool which was watched by a crowd of 17,000.

The caricature shown here by Pennington first appeared in the Warrington Guardian on September 8, 1934 and pays tribute to prop-forward Jack "Cod" Miller - Warrington's Steamroller, who is now a member of the Warrington Wolves Hall of Fame.
