WARRINGTON’S councillor responsible for communities says the divided United States will heal during the Joe Biden administration.

Democrat Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th President today, Wednesday, after Republican Donald Trump departed the White House.

Warrington Borough Council cabinet member Cllr Tony Higgins (LAB – Fairfield and Howley) expressed his confidence about the future of the nation.

The Labour politician has no doubt that communities in America will unite.

“It can be done and it will be done because there are many people who want to heal the wounds, rather than engage in anger,” he said.

“Nothing is achieved in anger, good things can only be achieved through conversations.

“Talking about matters is a key part of the healing process.

“The Biden administration is one of positivity and the message is very clear about working with other countries now.

“One of the first acts is to rejoin the Paris Agreement – that is going to be great for climate change and working on zero carbon emissions.”

But Cllr Higgins was critical of platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, suspending Republican Mr Trump’s account.

He added: “Blocking people from Facebook and taking them off Twitter is not the right way of doing it.

“They should be monitored, as we all are, that is the correct way of doing it.

“People have a right to freedom of speech and people can call them out for it – how can you call anybody out if it is not in the public domain?

“You need to prove them wrong, you can’t prove anyone wrong if you shut them down.

“All that happens with it is that it goes underground and it goes into the dark web.

“This is the danger, you push people further down. You need it out in the open, shine a light on it and call people out.

“You can’t call people out if you shut the conversation down.”
