The Academy in Bridge Street welcomes first tenant after becoming supported housing

Craig, 27, who has autism and ADHD, is the first person to move into the newly converted building after it was redeveloped by an adult health and social care charity.

Previously, the landmark construction was used for office space and was even home to the Warrington Guardian until 2016.

As the first tenant, Craig was invited to cut a red ribbon for The Academy's launch.

He said: "I was really nervous cutting the ribbon in case I somehow made a mistake and cut the wrong thing but it all went well.

"I love my new home and I am keeping it very clean.

"I'm enjoying doing some cooking with support from the staff and have already made spaghetti bolognese and tacos.

"I've made friends already.

"The other people are really nice here and so are the key workers.

"Once I've settled in, I would like to start looking for a job.

"I would like to be a DJ."

Joanne Birdsall, team leader at The Academy said: "The Academy is an incredible building and I feel extremely privileged to work here.

"There are some amazing original features including a dramatic fireplace in the front room and beautiful oak beams in the loft space apartments.

"Each of the apartments is individually designed.

"The Academy provides safe accommodation right at the heart of Warrington for people who have support needs.

"Our aim, in most cases, is to help people to build upon their independent living skills and eventually to move on to their own accommodation."

The Academy, situated just a few minutes walk from Times Square, is a development by Making Space, working in partnership with Inclusion Housing.

Each of the 22 apartments features an open plan kitchen/dining and living space, one bedroom and a modern bathroom.

Access is by a secure fob entry system and 24/7 on-site support is available.

Applications for tenancies are open to people aged 18 or above who have a range of needs including learning disabilities, autism, mental health and long term conditions.

You must have a support package and require on-going support in order to be eligible for a tenancy.
