REMEMBRANCE Day 2020 will be looking rather different in Warrington this year.

So while public services are off, the Warrington Guardian will be telling the story of one Warrington war hero every day this month until November 11.

Today, meet Robert McGinnigle, who was part of the First Airborne Division serving in the Netherlands, Italy and Germany. He also served in The Black Watch regiment.

Robert, who grew up in Great Sankey, was determined to serve his country from a young age.

His daughter Barbara Starkey said: "Dad ran away from home five times to join the army underage – and each time his dad brought him home."

When he finally became a soldier in 1938 he had a distinguished military career and even received a letter of thanks from Prince Olav for his part in the liberation of Norway on May 8, 1945.

But he still got in trouble with his dad from time to time.

Barbara added: "He parachuted into Arnhem on the day he was due to marry my mum, but obviously he wasn't able to tell her. Apparently his father was furious thinking my dad had jilted her."

Robert finally married Ella Veits on October 14, 1944, and they had two children.

After a full life, he died, aged 93, on September 1, 2015.
