A NUMBER of residents across Warrington say they have had no post delivered in recent weeks.

As reported two weeks ago, staff at the Milner Street delivery office walked out after a worker tested positive for Covid-19 and argued that they were not working in safe conditions.

It is believed the man was admitted to hospital with breathing difficulties but his condition has since improved.

There were also rumours of a second case in the office.

Residents from Old Hall to Appleton have been in touch with the Warrington Guardian to say they have not had any post for several weeks.

A worker at the Warrington sorting office, said: "We have five days worth of backed-up mail and the packets are worse than Christmas.

"We are using hire vans to keep the packets separate from everything else.

"People are not just ordering essentials, we are delivering gazebos, pillows, lamp shades and beauty products.

"We are doing our best to get the medications out first but there is so much stuff being ordered we can't keep up, even with staff sorting it 24/7.

"We now have split shift patterns with 7am and 11am starts for social distancing purposes.

"Hand sanitiser and two pairs of gloves are provided each day but most of us have bought our own.

"We are still short staffed with people being off."

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "We are working hard to deliver the most comprehensive service we can to all our customers in challenging circumstances.

"Despite our best endeavours, it is possible that some areas of the country may experience a reduction in service levels due to Coronavirus-related absences at their local mail centre or delivery office.

"We always endeavour to keep our customers as informed as we can of any changes to our services.

"We have a dedicated section on our website www.royalmail.com/coronavirus.

"We would like to thank all our colleagues across the UK for helping to keep the nation connected in such challenging circumstances.”
