A PROTEST in support of a soldier accused of attempting to murder a civilian during the troubles in Northern Ireland will take place at the Town Hall next week.

Veteran Dennis Hutchings is due to stand trial accused of murdering of John Patrick Cunningham more than four decades ago.

The 27-year-old, who had learning difficulties, was killed after being shot in the back as he ran away from an army patrol in County Tyrone in 1974.

Mr Hutchings has twice previously been cleared over Mr Cunningham’s death.

And protestors are set to stage a picket line at the Golden Gates at 9.30am on Monday, March 9, calling for an 'end to the persecution and prosecution of soldiers'.

A number of similar protests are set to be held across the country in order to coincide with the start of the 78-year-old’s trial in Belfast.

He denies attempted murder and attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm.

Veteran Craig Thompson has organised the Warrington picket line.

He said: “We’re holding a picket in support for veterans who are getting prosecuted for doing their job in Northern Ireland.”
