WARRINGTON Wolves Physical Disability Rugby League team have made history again.
They defeated Wakefield Trinity 10-4 in Sunday's Grand Final to be crowned the UK's first PDRL champions.
The Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation team, which includes comedian Adam Hills among its players, had already clinched the League Leaders’ Shield after finishing top of the six-team PDRL Super League and went into the weekend’s inaugural finals series Selby RUFC near Leeds as one of the favourites.
Firstly, The Wire defeated Castleford 4-0 in their semi-final, while Wakefield overcame Leeds 22-16 in their last-four showdown.
Captain Jason Elkaleh said: "To do it all year and get the shield and then after that lift the real thing is absolutely unbelievable.
"Hopefully we can back it up again next year."
The success caps two years since the team was formed.
Warrington featured in the UK’s first Physical Disability Rugby League match when they were defeated 22-10 by Leeds Rhinos at Victoria Park in February 2018.
And then they were victors in the first PDRL World Club Challenge, overhauling South Sydney Rabbitohs 34-12 at Sydney’s 83,000-capacity ANZ Stadium last August.
"I was more nervous in the morning of Sunday's finals that I was walking out at the ANZ Stadium," said Elkaleh, highlighting how much achieving victory would go on to mean to him and his teammates.
The players were visited by Wolves head coach Steve Price at their training session on Tuesday night to give the squad a pep talk ahead of the big occasion.
