WARRINGTON South MP Faisal Rashid says he would back Remain in a second EU referendum – but Warrington North MP Helen Jones is yet to reveal her position.

The Labour pair have been pressed on their stance after party leader Jeremy Corbyn challenged the next Prime Minister to hold a second EU vote, adding that Labour would campaign for Remain against either a no deal, or a Tory deal.

Mr Rashid has accused the Conservatives of ‘bungling’ Brexit negotiations and says the ongoing uncertainty is causing real damage, notably by ‘dragging down the economy and putting jobs at risk’.

He said: "Throughout this process, the issue of Brexit has been incredibly divisive in Parliament and in our communities too.

"Now both Tory leadership candidates are threatening a no-deal Brexit.

“Whoever becomes Prime Minister should have the confidence to put their deal, or no deal, back to the people in a public vote.

“After all, they have not been elected by the public in a general election.

“In these circumstances, I would campaign for Remain against either no deal or a Tory deal that does not protect the economy and jobs.”

Warrington was one of the areas that voted to exit the EU in the referendum in 2016 – with Leave winning 54.3 per cent of the vote.

Mr Rashid added: “As a democrat, I accepted the outcome of the 2016 referendum and have since supported finding a compromise which protects jobs and living standards while respecting the public’s decision to leave the EU.

“But I cannot accept a no-deal Brexit and the Tories’ Brexit plans.

“Faced with the choice between these options and Remain, I would choose Remain without reservation.”

However, Mrs Jones’ position is unclear, with the MP failing to respond to requests for a comment.
