BANK Quay and Padgate stations have been named among the best in Cheshire.

Warrington Bank Quay and Padgate were both named as winners during the 16th Cheshire Best Kept Station Awards.

More than 150 guests - including the Lord Lieutenant for Cheshire David Briggs - attended a ceremony at the Grange Theatre in Hartford on Tuesday, February 5.

Bank Quay station picked up the Award for Large Stations - with judges stating that the transport hub was 'very busy but well cared-for and clean and tidy in all areas'.

The station was also praised for having up-to-date travel information, friendly and knowledgeable staff, an efficient booking office and charity book sales.

Warrington Bank Quay operators Virgin Trains also picked up prizes for its work at Crewe and Stockport stations.

Head of commercial Darren Horley said: "It is part of our strategy to challenge the traditional views about station management and deliver a vision whereby they become more integral to the communities they serve.

"So we are delighted that three of our stations have been acknowledged, and would like to pass on our thanks to the organisers who deserve great credit for showcasing some of the great work that is taking place at stations throughout Cheshire."

Meanwhile, Padgate station scooped the Halton and Warrington Award due to its 'very good flower displays and the addition of artwork'.

Friends of Padgate Station chairman Bob McLaughlin added: "As volunteers, it always makes all your efforts very worthwhile when you are supported and recognised by a prestigious body such as Cheshire Best Kept Stations.

"The award for Padgate station has reinforced our enthusiasm to move forward with many more projects for our lovely station."
