THE Wire will aim to recruit “at least a couple” more new signings for the 2019 season, chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick says.
Wolves have already secured the signings of Canberra Raiders half-back Blake Austin and second-rowers Jason Clark and Matt Davis from South Sydney Rabbitohs and London Broncos respectively for next year.
Widnes Vikings hooker Danny Walker is rumoured to be a target, with reports heavily linking The Wire with a move for the Warrington-born former Crosfields and Rylands Sharks junior following the Vikings’ relegation to the Championship.
England Knights performance squad member Walker, 19, is one of the Vikings' hottest properties and is also believed to be interesting Wigan and St Helens.
Fitzpatrick says the club are “active” in the recruitment market but says new salary cap dispensations may mean more emphasis is placed on youth to fill out the squad.
He expects the likes of Luis Johnson and others from the club’s under 19s to play a more prominent first-team role next year.
“There should be at least a couple more additions to the squad,” he told the Guardian.
“There’s a couple of options available that we are looking at for next year
“There’s still a few places available and space on the salary cap to bring a couple of players in.
“We’re certainly active in the market. We’ve been reviewing our options for some time.
“As soon as we get that ink on the paper, the fans will be first to know.
“There’s been dispensations introduced where if you’re 21 and under, you don’t count on the salary cap. Those kind of players are invaluable to our squad.
“It allows us to go a little more top-heavy if we have those players who can come into the squad and play a couple of games here and there without taking up that salary cap space.
“The likes of Luis Johnson, Eribe Doro and Ellis Robson should be knocking on the door next year.”
