IT'S sad news to hear that Woolston High School is to close.
I fully understand the council's reasons for the decision but that won't make it any easier for the parents, pupils and staff.
The son of one of my own staff has just started at Woolston. Does this mean that he will now have to move schools when Woolston closes?
It's hugely important where you send your child to be educated - it's probably one of the most difficult decisions in any parent's life.
You want to have that choice, to pick the school you believe is the best. The one that's most convenient to you and where you think your child will receive the best education and leadership.
The years spent at secondary school are probably the most vital. You will be shaped into the adult you are to become - and those around you will have a massive influence on you.
Let's face it, those teenage years are not easy and a good school with supportive staff can make all the difference to parents struggling to survive the hurdles.
I was lucky enough to send my three boys to a fantastic primary school of my choice - within walking distance and to be able to choose between two good high schools - accessible by free school bus.
Once the eldest one had chosen his preferred school, the other two boys automatically went there when it was their turn. Sadly it doesn't appear to be like that any more.
I'm sure that the other schools are equally as good but it just means that the parents no longer have the choice and that's the point.
