A TEAM of Penketh cheerleaders have won a string of national titles at a competition in Prestatyn.

The ICE Cheerleading Championships, which took place from July 13 to 15, saw five of the Warrington Cheer Storm team's place in the top six of their divisions, including first.

The annual competition sees the athletes battle it out in categories including hip hop, jazz, contemporary, pom dance cheerleading and group stunt, as well as taking part in workshops.

But the highlight of the weekend for both the teams and coaches, was being presented with the Spirit award by event provider Incredibly Cool Events (ICE).

The award was given to Warrington Cheer Storm as recognition of the support and encouragement they gave to the other teams, as well as for their behaviour and teamwork.

Coach Angeline Rees thanked everyone for their support during the competition and congratulated the team on their win, which she said was the 'icing on the cake'.

She said: "It was an utterly superb day. We believe in progression rather than speed and encourage our athletes to also learn leadership skills during their time with us.

"Above all else our hope is for the athletes to have fun and be proud of themselves.

"The results are something we as a club are very proud of and look forward to season four which will be even more exciting than the last.

"We welcome anyone who would like to try and hopefully become part of our cheer family."

Parent Jackie Collinson, whose 11-year-old daughter Bella has been a part of Cheer Storm for two seasons, said: "The teams are amazing, but the coaches are something else.

"The work they put in for the girls just out of love for them and cheer is fantastic, they all work full-time and still train so many teams.

"We are so proud of them."

Warrington Cheer Storm was set up in 2015 to encourage teamwork and friendship, as well as sporting ability and activity in the area.

The teams, who train at Penketh High School on Heath Road, range in age from four up to mid 20s, in a mixture of all star cheer and stunt teams.
