TELEVISION images captured a St Helens spectator pushing Warrington Wolves player Bryson Goodwin during last night's match at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
An incident on the field sparked by Wire winger Tom Lineham and Saints full-back Ben Barba in the 72nd minute resulted in a flare-up next to the touchline close to a corner post.
As players grappled and splintered into little groups during the fiery moment, Wire's left centre Goodwin was pushed from behind.
The New Zealander turned to see it was a spectator wearing a replica Saints shirt, carrying a beer in his right hand.
While another fan pulled him away, a second pal joined in with a verbal volley.
Goodwin said something back before being ushered away by teammate Ben Murdoch-Masila.
At that time, the match was in a stalemate at 12-12 with Wolves camped in the Saints half looking for the winning score.
Goodwin had made a break that led to Lineham and Barba having a disagreement.
Saints, the Super League leaders, went on to defeat third-placed Wire 14-12 with a 55-metre penalty goal from scrum-half Danny Richardson in the final act of the game.
