I must commend the B&M store in Warrington for its responsible attitude to selling alcohol to young people who might be under age.

The store is good for bargains of all kinds including cheap booze (and no, I wasn't buying any!

A group of students or at least they looked like students) were behind me in the queue trying to buy several enormous bottles of lager and cider - a sort of cheapo version of White Lightning.

The assistant told them - quite clearly - that she would need to see ID from all of them before she could serve them.

One guy had his passport and another girl produced some ID, but not everyone had it.

So she told them she couldn't serve any of them.

To be fair to the students, they accepted it with good grace - there was no backchat or snide comments.

But I was pleased to see the store taking such care.

It can't be easy being a shop assistant and asking young folk for ID.

I'm sure that smaller off-licences have a real problem with youngsters trying to get served.

And I don't imagine that everyone is as polite as the young people I saw today.
