ARSONISTS started a fire at a timber yard under the Cantilever Bridge last night.
Residents of nearby Cantilever Gardens reported the blaze to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service shortly after 10.30pm yesterday, Tuesday.
Two fire engines were sent to the scene, off Station Road, with crews discovering that a shipping container and two mobile buildings had been set alight.
Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire, and used an electric saw to gain access to one of the mobiles.
Timber beams were cut away from the mobile building, before a thermal imaging camera found a hotspot underneath the flooring.
Crews, who spent a total of two hours at the scene, used a saw and an axe to cut through the floor and extinguish the remaining fire.
Developers are currently seeking planning permission to build 189 apartments on the site, formerly the Beers Timber and Building Supplies yard.
It is believed that the fire was started deliberately.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Cheshire Police on 101, or to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
