WARRINGTON’s top high schools have been revealed in the publication of new league tables.

The Department for Education released its annual school league tables today, Thursday.

And finishing top of the tree on the first time it has appeared in the league tables, which measure pupils’ progress from joining each school, was King’s Leadership Academy in Woolston.

St Gregory’s Catholic High School in Old Hall came in second with a rating of above average, having finished second bottom in 2017.

Great Sankey High School and Bridgewater High School were also ranked as above average.

Beamont Collegiate Academy and Culcheth High School received average scores as did Lymm High School, which finished top of the league table in 2017.

Birchwood Community High School, Cardinal Newman Catholic High School, Penketh High School and the now closed Future Tech Studio were below average.

Having finished bottom of the list in 2017, Sir Thomas Boteler Church of England High School in Latchford again propped up the league table for mainstream secondary schools.

Also rated as well below average by the Department for Education was University Academy Warrington in Padgate.

As a whole, the town’s school were ranked as below average with a Progress 8 score of -0.12, compared to a national average score of -0.03.

But Warrington schools fared better in the Attainment 8 measure.

A spokesman for Warrington Borough Council said: "We are pleased with progress being made at key stage four level in the borough.

"Our results place us among the best performing in the north west.

"Warrington is ranked third for the percentage of pupils achieving a strong pass in English and maths, and our average Attainment 8 score places us fifth in the 23 north west authorities.

"Overall, this represents and improvement on the position in 2017."
