NO post will be delivered on Thursday, as Royal Mail staff in Warrington take part in staggered industrial action. Postmen will not deliver to addresses with a WA postcode.

Staff at the Regional Distribution Centre in Lingley Mere and the Rail Terminal in Dallam will hold a one-day strike on Wednesday.

Dave Kennedy, the branch secretary for the Communication Workers Union, said the strikes were to protect the service.

"It's very unfortunate for the customer, but we are attempting to ensure they have a high level of service in the future," he said.

The CWU said plans to reform Royal Mail could lead to 40,000 job losses, including the possible closure of the Milner Street sorting office, which employs 300 people.

Mr Kennedy said there had been no progress since one-day strikes last month. He added: "The support we have received has been phenomenal. One of us is going to have to blink first and I don't think it's going to be us."

Royal Mail has said it pays wages and pensions more generously than its rivals and must modernise in the face of competition from rivals like TNT.

The Dallam rail terminal employs around 50 people, and the regional distribution centre in Lingley Green employs around 550 people, mostly from Manchester, Liverpool and Bolton.
