ERNIE the fastest milkman in the west has a new rival.
For newly retired Pat Gater is after his job.
And staff at Our Lady's Primary School, Latchford, were only too happy to oblige in making the teacher's dream to drive a milk float come true with a retirement present with a difference.
Staff and pupils kept the big stunt a secret from the 58-year-old who leaves the school after 28 years' service.
Staff came up with the idea for the send off when Pat revealed her burning ambition years before on a teacher-training course.
She said: "I said at the time I really want to drive a milk float and some of the staff remembered. I am never going to say too much about myself to the staff again."
Mrs Gater was summoned to the playground, where the children and her chariot awaited.
After donning her white jacket and milkman's cap, she was all set to take the milk float for a spin around the playground, with what else but Ernie, the Fastest Milkman in the West playing on loud speakers.
"This school has always been special to me and it always will be. It has been a wonderful surprise and I am absolutely gobsmacked," she added.
The milk float was organised by Dairy Crest, who also donated free drinks to all of the pupils at the school. vicki.stockman@guardiangrp.co.uk
