POLICE are warning motorists not to give thieves an easy ride.

By improving security in cars Warrington police believe there could be a reduction in break ins.

Drivers are reminded not to leave belongings on display which attract wouldbe crooks.

A spokesman for Warrington police said: "We are just urging motorists to take a few simple steps to ensure their car is secure and less likely to be a target.

"Don't leave anything on display - even an old coat on the back seat is a target for someone to smash a window and grab it."

Statistics have also revealed that 80 per cent of cars stolen in the past six months were more than sis years old and without up to date security.

Bewsey, Whitecross, Fairfield and Howley as well as Orford are areas which are hotspots for car thieves.

Police suggest drivers take the following measures: l Lock doors, close all windows and shut the sunroof every time a car is left unattended.

l Try to park in well lit and open places.

l Fit locking wheel nuts to protect wheels and tyres.

l Don't leave anything on display, particularly laptops and documents.

l Mark valuables such as stereos so they can be traced if stolen.

l Remember to lock all security devices such as wheel locks.
