IT’S enshrined in Beatles history that the Fab Four played in Warrington only the once.
It was at the Bell Hall, on Orford Lane, on July 20, 1962. Those who saw the band – who were on the cusp of fame at the time – paid just 2/6d for the privilege.
But I’m hoping you might be able to help me shed light on whether the Beatles paid further trips to the town – albeit as visitors – at the height of Beatlemania.
Read on and let’s see if we can solve this Mop-Top mystery.
Those of you who read my earlier column, Papercuts, in 2003 might recall I did a number of pieces about the bungalow George Harrison bought for his parents in Appleton.
The property, Sevenoaks, on Old Pewterspear Lane, became home to Harry and Louise Harrison as an escape from their Liverpool home. Life had become impossible as hundreds of fans were turning up each week.
So Appleton became their refuge.
In that original column I told readers George mentioned in an interview that he wrote While My Guitar Gently Weeps at Appleton.
A few people contacted me with their memories.
One gentleman said he was one of the builders who constructed the bungalow and remembered George Harrison buying the property.
Another reader recalled the Beatles’ lead guitarist buying everyone a drink at the Red Lion in Penketh while visiting his brother Peter who lived in that part of town.
George and his first wife Patti (who inspired Something) were frequent visitors to Mr and Mrs Harrison’s bungalow. George was spotted from time to time in Stockton Heath.
Website Beatles Bible records that George and his driver drove to Appleton on Boxing Day 1965 and slept on camp beds in the attic.
In the recent Martin Scorsese documentary about George, Living in the Material World, there is a picture of the Beatle with his arms around his parents. The photo is clearly taken in the garden at Sevenoaks.
I often pass the bungalow when I’m walking or jogging in the area. It has undergone many alterations in recent years and is very different to how George would have remembered it.
So, to the mystery.
Can anyone recall the rest of the Beatles staying at Appleton? I would love to confirm stories I’ve heard, apparently originating from the people who bought the bungalow from the Harrison family.
Is it true that John, Paul and Ringo were also visitors to Appleton? Did they come together (see what I did there) or separately?
It would be fascinating to preserve any dimming memories out there before they are finally snuffed out.
All memories welcome. You know where to find me.
