JUDGING by letters sent to our offices over the past week or so, we have a serious situation at our cemeteries and graveyards.

Both Warrington Cemetery and Fox Covert are being allowed to deteriorate with weeds obscuring pathways and growing up memorial stones.

Understandably, relatives of those laid to rest there are upset at this lack of care and attention.

Unless you have lost someone, you can't quite understand how special it is to be able to visit your loved one, talk to them, lay flowers or gifts on their grave and do so in tranquil surroundings.

We already have a situation where gravestones - presumably of those who have no living relatives - have had to be laid flat for safety.

Passing the graveyard in Stockton Heath as I often do, it seems so sad that we can't do something about this.

Memorial stones cost a small fortune and surely we have a duty as a society to make sure that graves are properly looked after and not neglected?

And it's time for the council to to take some action.

It must make sure it has sufficient workers - either paid labour or volunteers - to keep our cemeteries in good order so that the bereaved can pay their respects in serene surroundings.
