SO Mr Smith's is once more to become a nightclub.
What a blow for all the campaigners who were hoping to secure the site to create a new theatre for Warrington.
I must say that former mayor Linda Dirir's vision of a theatre by the river with a bistro sounded much more to my taste.
I suppose it was always going to be difficult to buy that site, if not a nightclub then developers certainly had the right sort of cash to acquire it for more high-rise apartments.
But another nightclub isn't going to do anything for our bad reputation as a no-go town in the evenings for anyone over the age of 30.
And rumours of it opening until 7am are not going to solve our town's booze culture.
Young drinkers booted out of their favourite pub at 2am can enjoy another five hours of boozing in the new 'super club'.
As many normal people are on their way to work, the club will be emptying.
I pity the police trying to keep order with many clubbers having been boozing for 12 hours or even more.
What we need in our town centre is more decent restaurants - what we don't need is more pubs and clubs.
Let's hope that the police will have something to say about the new club owner's application for a late licence.
We can but hope.
