WALES football star and former Birchwood High School student James Chester surprised pupils at the school when he stepped onto the stage at the end of year assembly.
The star defender, who played for the Wales team that made it to the semi finals of the European Championships earlier this month, took time out of his schedule to share the success with youngsters in his hometown.
Deputy head teacher John Burnham said: "It was great to see James. I taught him History in 2003 and have followed his career ever since.
"We were all proud to see him representing Wales in the Euros and playing with so much passion and commitment.
"He used to put in similar performances for our school team.
"The learners were delighted to meet him as they had their shirts signed and photographs taken.
"James is an inspiration for our young people . If you work hard and follow your dreams anything is possible."
James presented prizes to pupils at the school and posed for photographs with many of the students.
