ROCK and Roll, adrenaline and the roar of the crowd helped a 49-year-old Appleton PCSO battle through the pain to complete his first half marathon.

PCSO Dave Mahon and PC Tony Davidson completed an intensive training programme to gear up for the Liverpool Rock 'n' Roll half marathon on May 29.

The pair are part of the 'Five-0 runners' group made up of members from Warrington Police Station, on Arpley Street.

The event, which started in 1998, gives participants the chance to enjoy the sounds of different Rock 'n' Roll bands at each mile of the course.

Both officers completed the John West Liverpool Spring 10k weeks earlier before starting preparations for their latest race.

But PCSO Mahon, who has been patrolling Appleton for nine years, knew every minute devoted to the challenge was worth it after completing the 13.1-mile route in 2h 25m 35s, just ahead of PC Davidson.

"The first six or seven miles were the worst but we just had to get past that stage," he said.

"The pain started to creep in towards the end quite a lot too and it was difficult but the adrenaline kept me going.

"It is great to have completed my first half marathon – it was an amazing event to take part in.

"We started at Albert Dock and finished there after going through the city.

"The crowd were fantastic and proved to be a big help when we were out on the course.

"Me and Tony stuck together for the majority of the race.

"We trained hard for it. I have been running and swimming quite a lot and will continue to do so.

"I will be doing this event again next year, which I am already looking forward to."

A number of officers at the station involved in the running group are set to take part in the Scouse 5k in September.

Furthermore, PCSO Mahon said he his hoping to arrange a fundraising run with colleagues to raise money for a dementia charity in the near future.
