POLICE have issued a warning to residents not to inadvertently advertise gifts to thieves this Christmas.
Assistant chief constable Mark Roberts has called on the public to remain safety conscious so we don’t fall foul of opportunistic thieves.
He said: “Here at Cheshire Police we wish you all a merry Christmas and I want to reiterate that we’re here for you over the festive period.
"There are a few simple safety precautions you can adopt to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of crime or advertising your new gifts to thieves."
The public have been warned not to leave boxes for high value items outside your front door and remain safe online by ignoring links from people you don't know.
If you’re out visiting family and friends don’t leave gifts in full view of the window under the Christmas tree.
Cheshire Police is also encouraging party goers to have fun, but stay safe while celebrating.
Assistant Chief Constable Roberts added: “Cheshire is a safe place to live and the chance that you or a member of your family or friends will be the victim of a violent crime is low.
"Although the news often seems full of stories of violent crime, crimes of this nature are still comparatively rare and account for a very small part of recorded crime.
“Cheshire Police are here for you over Christmas, and will support you when and where you need us.
"You can help us to help you by adopting some safety advice, which will keep you safe whilst you’re out and about.”
This includes not walking home alone and not leaving drinks unattended.
Cheshire Police will be issuing safety advice through its social media accounts, to remind people about staying safe.
