THE traffic nightmare in the town centre caused by roadworks on the M6 is finally over after a Highways England spokesman confirmed work has been completed.

Motorists have been caught in long queues during the morning and evening rush hour throughout last week after a lane on the slip road from the M6 southbound to the M56 had to be closed following a crash on November 5.

Work to replace the damaged barrier lead to a full closure on Sunday evening with the hope of completing work ahead of rush hour this morning, Monday.

A Highways England spokesman said: "The work was scheduled to take place between 9pm and 5am but we managed to get the road open again by 11.45pm.

"They did a fantastic job to install the new barrier in that time period and during bad weather as well.

"Once again we would like to thank drivers for their patience.

"The closure was in place for their safety after a vehicle restraint barrier had been very badly damaged.

"Motorists may not have seen work taking place for a large period of time but that was because it was all taking place behind the scenes to manufacture the new barrier."

Motorists may have experienced some delays this morning however on the M6 due to a broken down lorry.
