A SERIES of warnings have been issued by Cheshire Police ahead of the Christmas rush to prevent shoppers from falling victim to thieves.

As the festive period approaches, officers are urging shoppers to be vigilant when they are out and about.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Roberts said: “Purse dipping can be distressing for victims.

“They not only lose money and face the hassle of cancelling and re-arranging cards, but purses and wallets often contain pictures and similar items which have a sentimental value and are literally irreplaceable.

“Purse dippers are not worried about people’s feelings. They’re looking for an easy touch and are quite unscrupulous.”

Shoppers have also been reminded not to leave presents and any valuables on show in vehicles.

Police and crime commissioner for Cheshire, John Dwyer said: “Christmas is the season of goodwill to all men.

“However, some people take the opportunity to help themselves to things that aren’t theirs.

“By taking precautions to help yourself, you’re helping officers on the frontline to support you, when and where they’re needed.”

By taking a few simple precautions shoppers can deter opportunistic thieves.

Drivers are being urged to ensure their vehicles are locked and secure when left unattended and remove any valuable items.

Motorists should also wipe away the mark from the windscreen that has been left by the suction pad from sat navs.

ACC Roberts said: “Christmas is a time for giving, however it’s important that we don’t let thieves take presents that are meant for family and friends.

“It may not just be presents that you’ve bought, but everyday items such as sat navs and iPods are also high on a thief’s wish list.

“It’s vital that you remove any valuable items from your vehicles, to deter opportunistic thieves from helping themselves.”

Anyone with information about these types of offences should call Cheshire Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
