SIKHS across the town joined in unity at Warrington Guru Nanak Gurdwara to celebrate Diwali – but opted against setting off fireworks due to ongoing troubles in India.

Diwali, which is known as the festival of lights, coincides with Sikh festival Bandi Chhor Divas and the community gathered at the Latchford temple, on Dover Road, last night, Wednesday.

But following the 'desecration' of the religion's holy book, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, in India last month, the temple did not celebrate traditionally.

Gurdwara secretary Pritam Tatla said: "Accepting the call of Sikh leaders in Punjab, India, the Sikh community has resolved to boycott fireworks during this year's Diwali."

Tempers flared after the holy book was disrespected and it has led to the third instance where a 'Black Diwali' has been held.

It was not celebrated in protest of Operation Blue Star in 1984 and eight years later due to troubles in India.

Cheshire Police officers and the Rev Stephen Kingsnorth were in attendance at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara.

All who were present were asked to wear a black headscarf as a mark of respect.
