GORDON Haynes, husband of Vera Haynes, died of pneumonia on July 3, aged 86.
Mr Haynes, from Winwick, was born in Earlestown.
He was first employed at Burtonwood Air Base as an accountant, before working as HR manager at Vulcan Engineering and Weir Pumps. He had also served in the Royal Navy.
Mr Haynes played rugby league in the Navy and amateur rugby for Latchford Albion, before turning professional for Oldham and Swinton.
In the 1950s he had played for a Great Britain team against France and New Zealand.
In his later years he enjoyed playing golf at Haydock Park.
Mr Haynes enjoyed holidays in Sicily and loved the company of his family.
He leaves his wife and a son. He was predeceased by a son.
A service was held on July 16 at Winwick Church, followed by cremation at Walton Lea. Canon June Steventon officiated.
