Getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life is one of the main reasons why many people go walking. Getting into the hills provides an escape from the pressures of life allowing you to enjoy the fresh air and natural surroundings. However in our crowded island it seems that finding some space of your own is becoming increasingly difficult.

Don't despair! Despite the holiday crowds, it is easy to get away and enjoy some solitude even in what many perceive as crowded parts of the UK. The Lake District is not too far up the M6 yet it has the reputation for drawing the crowds. Try and park in Windermere or Keswick on a Bank Holiday Monday and you will see what I mean.

Fortunately there is another side to this National Park. Can you imagine not seeing a person on a Bank Holiday in the Lakes? Probably not but it is possible if you escape to the hills. By carefully choosing a walk that is away from the main centres and by starting early you can often walk all day and see only a handful of fellow walkers.

Note - Please make sure you do not venture into the hills without the correct equipment, map, food and drinks.
