School reunions, book giveaways and new kits: 6 things we learned in Orford, Padgate, Woolston, Fearnhead this week

A LIBRARY team celebrated World Book Night by giving away books.

Books were given away to members of the public at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub and to as part of the celebrations for the national event.

The LiveWire team and pupils from Penketh High School also travelled to the Halliwell Jones stadium to give books to the players after their morning training session as part of LiveWire’s Rugby Reading Challenge.

Football team needs votes to secure funding

A FOOTBALL team is hoping to bag up to £1,000 in funding to help it to compete at more tournaments.

Fife Rangers under 7s needs as many votes as possible for it to be in with a chance of winning some funding from the Aviva Community Fund.

The team, which meets for practice every Tuesday at the University of Chester’s campus on Crab Lane at 6pm, is funded completely by donations and the players contribute £2 a week on top of their subs to make sure they can go to as many tournaments as possible.

Jodie Sorton, whose son plays for the team and husband coaches them, said: “They are playing really well at the moment. They have only lost two or three games this season.

“The team wants to take part in quite a lot of tournaments this summer because they have been doing so well but because of a lack of funds sometimes they can’t take part.

“We want to get the boys some good sports equipment and there are some disadvantaged children who play for the team that we would like to be able to support.

“Each player pays subs for the upkeep of the pitch and other things but each brings an extra £2 a week so they can save up and pay for tournaments.”

The team has been playing so well they were invited to play Everton’s under 7s academy team at their Finch Farm training ground last week.

Care service rated good by CQC

A CARE service has been rated as good by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following an inspection.

Home Instead Senior Care, which is based on Long Lane, Warrington, is an agency which provides personal care to people with a range of needs in their own home.

The service, which is a franchise, was rated good in all five areas required by the CQC to get the rating overall.

The report highlighted how 'people who used the service were of the opinion that the service was caring and that their care needs were met by the provider'.

It also read: "Care plans and risk assessments had also been completed to ensure staff understood how to meet individual needs and keep people safe."

The service was inspected by the CQC on March 9 and 10 and the report of its findings was published on April 28.

New kit for rugby team

AN under-16s rugby team has scored a new home kit thanks to house builders Morris Homes.

Morris has supplied a full kit for Rylands Sharks’ Under 16s rugby team which plays across the North West region in amateur Rugby League.

The sponsorship forms part of an ongoing partnership between the Gorsey Lane-based club and Morris, after its nearby Sandford Village development on Bruche Avenue supplied the club’s under 15s team with new training kits last year.

Alan Brown, coach at Rylands Sharks, said: “After the brilliant training kits that Morris Homes provided last year, we are really pleased to be continuing our partnership with them and the new home kits look fantastic.

“The team recently wore the kits in a match for the first time and it definitely encouraged them to play with even more confidence, so we are thankful to Morris for its support.”

School reunion for class of 86

A SCHOOL reunion is being held for pupils who attended Montford and Beamont schools in the year they joined together.

The event is being held at the Monks in Woolston on June 26 from 7pm for pupils from the class of 1986, the year the schools combined to become William Beamont.

Pupils the classes of 85 and 87 are also invited and admission is £1.

Centre's thank you for successful event

A NEIGHBOURHOOD service centre would like to thank everyone who attended its St George’s Day event.

The event, held at Longford Neighbourhood Service Centre was a success, despite some unpredictable weather, and included a Punch and Judy show and a bouncy castle.

Chairman Roy Humphreys and the committee would like to thank Manchester United Football Club, Warrington Wolves Ruby Club, Orford Fryer, One Stop shop, for the items they donated for the raffle, all the proceeds from which will go to the centre.

They would also like to thank all the volunteers who helped on the day and to DJs Alan and Sandra Bradshaw for the great music.
