SECURITY cameras for bus shelters in Great Sankey have been proposed by a parish councillor.

Alan Litton, also a Liberal Democrat borough councillor for Great Sankey South, has been researching the installation of the cameras, which are already used in Padgate.

The company concerned, Vitatech, would fit eight cameras to a shelter.

The cameras could then be relocated up to three times.

The two-year contract, worth £2,700, would include footage from the cameras being used in evidence six times.

A meeting of the parish council heard that a bus shelter in Highfield Avenue had been smashed "three or four" times since Christmas, and that it was linked to ongoing vandalism in Highfield Avenue, near Penketh High School Clr Litton said: "There have been a lot of problems with bus shelters in Sankey south. Something has to be done about this problem."

Clr Keith Gleave, also a Liberal Democrat borough councillor for Whittle Hall, said: "It needs a few of these cases to go to court.

"Then we will start to see the problem drop off a touch. It's a big concern."

Cheryl Wakefield warned the councillors that installing the cameras could be a legal minefield.

Clr Peter Carey said it was important that the police were in favour of the cameras.

Clr Litton said he would organise a meeting between the police, borough council and shelter manufacturers Adshel.

The council agreed that this was the best way to take the matter forward.
