THIS is the man battered to death at HMP Risley.

TWO prisoners have been jailed for life for the attack.

Marcus Nelson, aged 30, and Aaron Nelson, aged 24, launched a vicious attack on convicted car thief Paddy Butler in November 2005.

Chester Crown Court heard on Friday how the 42-year-old suffered a fractured skull and face and brain damage during the beating in Nelson's cell and died four days later in Warrington Hospital.

The pair, both from Wolverhampton, denied murder, claiming three other prisoners, who they refused to name, carried out the attack.

During a three-week trial they said they were prevented from going to the aid of Mr Butler, also from Wolverhampton, by one of the men brandishing a knife.

But a jury of eight women and four men failed to believe it after hearing that Nelson dragged the unconscious Mr Butler out of his cell following the incident and hid him under a stairwell before calmly going for a shower.

The court heard the attack sparked a riot between rival gangs and allegations were made by prisoners called as witnesses, of drug and mobile phones being smuggled in.

Sentencing Nelson to a mini- mum of 14 years and Gordon to at least 16 years, Judge RHQ Henriques, said: "What you both did was a brutal consequence of two callous bullies."
