A BEWSEY and Whitecross councillor has expressed concern at the area's influx of temporary workers from Poland.

Clr Jeff Richards wants to make sure the high levels of transient foreign workers do not affect attempts to regenerate the area.

He said at last week's sustainable environment committee meeting at the Town Hall: "In the streets behind the Mad Hatter pub, I would say 80 per of that area is rented to other nationalities.

"How do we engage with them on regeneration?

"Not just to put their minds at rest, but the people who have lived there for years, and that there's some form of mechanism where we can address some of the issues around landlords.

"We need to engage with the stable community, and put their minds at rest.

"Because as soon as a house becomes available, it's rented and it's gone. The stable community keeps going down all the time, and they need an uplift."

Jane Crichley, the neighbourhood manager for the Stronger Together project, which works in Warrington's deprived communities, said engaging with foreign workers could only be done with great difficulty'.

She said the key was to work with members of the transient communities who stay and make the area their home.

She said the borough council was working with the Polish Catholic Church and Warrington Community Ethnic Association.
