MUMS in Orford have united to create a community resource for their children and the facility is going from strength to strength.

Mum-of-three Wendy Pitts and two likeminded mums, Kath Davies and Carol Kilgannon, were fed up with the younger children in the area having nothing to do and nowhere to go.

So the mums decided to create Dudes and Divas children's club.

After securing funding from Sure Start and other groups and holding a series of fundraising events, the committee has now launched its own after school club.

The committee has also been able to provide two trips for the children.

Currently the club is based at the community flat on Alder Lane and offers arts and crafts and games every Wednesday.

And the facility has become so popular in the area that already it is looking for larger premises to it can offer more activities, such as baking and a homework help club.

Wendy said: "The kids were crying out for something like this. A lot of them have older siblings and seeing them go off to youth clubs they felt left out. There was a real lack of facilities for the four-to-nine age group, so we decided to do something about it.

"Although we knew there would be some interest, we had no idea it would become so popular so quickly. The Orford Neighbourhood Project has been absolutely brilliant - it has supported us right from the word go and is letting us use the flat free of charge."

She added: "The group is already beginning to make a huge difference to the community and looks set to keep on growing."
