ASSURANCES have been given to residents who are living in fear of drug dealers in Longford.

Police have agreed to step up patrols in the area following a meeting with ward councillor Mike Hannon over complaints that residents are too afraid to leave their homes.

Householders living in and around the St Stephen's Avenue area say that drug dealers are openly trading from their own doorsteps.

Several sites in the area, including the former Corner House building, which has been earmarked for demolition, have become known hot spots for dealers.

Last week, Clr Hannon met with Alex Kane, inspector for the central neighbourhood policing unit, to discuss residents' concerns. As a result, police have agreed to step up their patrols.

Clr Hannon said: "It's getting to the stage where people are afraid to come forward. Some are even too afraid to leave their homes.

"A lot of them just want out because they have simply had enough.

"It's time something was done. We know who they are and where they live and they need to be driven out.

"Drugs are regularly being dropped off right in front of residents' faces and in front of children too. No wonder these people are afraid."

He added: "People just want to get on with their lives but they are being intimidated on a daily basis and need some comfort. Hopefully an increased police presence will do that."

Inspector Alex Kane of Warrington police said: "We had a meeting with Clr Hannon last week and the outcomes were very positive.

"We are working very closely with Golden Gates Housing to ensure people feel safe and to reassure residents we are acting on their concerns.

"We will also be in regular contact with local councillors including Clr Hannon to help identify potential isses."
