FIREFIGHTERS are worried that new rules for bringing your wheelie bin out early may encourage arson attacks.

Warrington Borough Council is asking residents to put their bins out by 6.30am on collection days.

It says this is part of an improved service that will reduce disruption during Christmas and bank holidays.

But a firefighter from Warrington Station said: "Because we get quite a high proportion of arson on wheelie bins this could potentially cause problems."

Councillor John Joyce (LAB - Burtonwood) sits on Cheshire Fire Authority. He is also concerned.

He said: "One of the big issues we have in Warrington is small fires and arsons on cars - but especially wheelie bins.

"The new system of collection is increasing the chance of fire. We do know there are wards where this is a particular problem."

However, Clr Brian Axcell, executive board member for environment services, said that the rules may not apply for long.

He said: "After a few weeks residents will notice that their bin is emptied at a regular time each week and they may no longer need to put it out by 6.30am.

"This will happen as we identify the best routes for refuse wagons, which will allow collections to fall into a regular schedule.

"We appreciate residents' patience on this as we work towards our aim of providing a reliable and efficient refuse service."

Adrian Luty, group manager for emergency response at Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, says it does not anticipate any major increase in bin fires.

He said: "We would recommend that refuse bins are set out early on the morning of collection or are put out as late as possible the night before.

"In terms of fire safety, we would advise that bins are placed as far away as possible from any buildings, fences, hedges or escape routes."
