Great Sankey Parish Council were objected to Westbrook 1' - the new town housing to be built around Hood Lane.
The general mood of the time was glum. The energy crisis and a 65 per cent power reduction had left Warrington's industry on a three-day week.
More than 8,000 people were unemployed. The letters page was dominated by debate about politics and the unions, signed with names like Free Thinking Worker' and Fed Up Payer'.
The new year brought good news for Joseph Weaver of 15 Doyle Avenue, Orford. He was celebrating his birthday when he was told his daughter Shelagh Weaver had given birth to a seven pound 14 oz baby daughter.
Shelagh lived at 93 Multon Grove in Padgate with husband Jack.
