The front page of the paper screamed Town At Mercy of Mersey Rip-tide'.

A flood had hit the town, leaving Eastford Road in Lower Walton under three feet of water. Firefighters had to rescue ten members of staff from St Johns RC School in Latchford.

Ms Warrington Rugby League Janet Ramsey was also on the front page, rubbing a TV set to give Warrington luck in their cup semi-final with Oldham.

The Poll-Tax was also causing uproar. Protestors picketed the town hall over rates including £40 in Penketh and £391 in the town centre.

Clr Leader Mike Hall, now the MP for Weaver Vale, said the tax would be "unfair, unpopular and immoral."

The brutal poll tax riots in London were only four weeks away. John Major decided to scrap it after replacing Mrs Thatcher as Prime Minister in November.

Sadly, this week also marked the passing away of Mark Carlton, aged 13, from Fletcher Street in Latchford, who lost a 21-month battle with leukaemia.

He first hit the headlines when he met his hero Nick Faldo.
