Warrington Speakers Club was pleased to welcome the Deputy Mayor of Warrington, Clr Celia Jordan, to its February meeting.

Deputy Mayor Consort Roy Jefferson accompanied her and both participated in the evening's programme, with the deputy mayor speaking about some notable events in both her personal and civic life, while the Consort spoke in the extempore speaking session.

Chairman Peter Turner introduced an evening which was designed as practice in after-dinner speaking, where the techniques and disciplines are very different from other forms of speaking to audiences.

John Hill practiced proposing the toast to the guests at the upcoming annual dinner, while John Sanson responded to a toast in honour of the imaginary founder of the Society for the Advancement of Inflated Language in the style of Victor Borge.

Brian Carter amused members with his response to the toast to the guests at the annual dinner of the Warrington Branch of the Association of Idlers, Loafers and Slackers in which he poked gentle fun at some of those present.

The off the cuff' speaking session was chaired by Noel Alms and the whole evening was summed up by Paul Whittle.

Visitors are always welcome to monthly meetings at the Village Hotel in Warrington. The next meeting will be on Thursday, March 8, at 7.30pm. Contact Mike Davies on 818572 for details.
