A SKILLED soldier from Bewsey has come third in a regional competition to find the best Territorial Army team in the north west.
Former Great Sankey High School pupil, Sergeant David Hughes, aged 29, was part of an eight-man team from D Company 4th Battalion, Duke of Lancaster Regiment, taking part in the Derby Trophy.
The annual contest pits the military skills of each team against others in the north west and included tasks like evacuating casualties while under enemy fire and rescuing kidnapped journalists, in a fictional civil war scenario.
Sgt Hughes, who has served in the TA since 1995 and now trains at Ardwick Green, in Manchester, said: "This is hard and proper training - real infantry training.
"I really enjoy being in the TA because you get a good sense of team work and it's also a bit of a laugh.
"You also get to travel to lots of different places."
