A NEWLY acquired set of trains could ease congestion on a busy commuter route through Warrington, it has been confirmed.

The nine trains have been moved to Central Trains and could one day service the crowded Liverpool to Norwich service through Warrington Central.

The former British Rail Class 158 units moved on from Transpennine Express after TPE bought modern new trains.

A spokesman for Central Trains said: "They will be used to add extra seats on key passenger journeys including Liverpool to Norwich, but at the moment, we can't say exactly which routes will get the longer trains."

The Class 158 is a two-car express diesel unit built in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Rail Magazine reported the trains are likely to be used in a six-car set up for long distance journeys.

Eight trains are expected by the end of March and the last one in June.
