PANAMA Jacks has applied to open late again - months after surviving a licensing review when police branded it a crime hotspot.

The Bridge Street bar had it's opening hours and capacity dramatically reduced at the hearing in September.

But the Warrington Guardian understands that the borough council and police are pleased with the improvements made since then.

The changes have cut thefts and assaults - the two main problems at the site. There were also concerns about the conduct of the doorstaff.

The bar wants to be able to serve drinks until 3am and stay open until 4am from January 2.

At present it can serve until 2am and open until 2.30am.

It also wants to have a capacity of 450 - the current capacity is 375, cut from 520 before the review.

The bar introduced numerous new safety measures, including fluorescent jackets for the doormen, more CCTV and better training for staff.

The bar is owned by 54-year-old St Helens businessman Steve Lawler through Bridge Street Leisure Ltd, which also owns the Breeze Bar next door.

Panama Jacks, the police and Warrington Borough Council did not comment on the application.
