OUR entertaining speaker, June Corner, arrived with an enormous suitcase, filled with a wonderful selection of underwear, although her talk was entitled 'Knickers'.
She began by showing us items from Victorian times and progressed through the decades up to the present day.
How fashions have changed!
How thankful we were not to need bustles, corsets and several layers of underskirts.
Many of us remembered having to wear liberty bodices and coping with suspenders or elastic that could sometimes become perished, with disastrous results.
Then we were reminded of the sea-side holidays, wearing newly knitted bathing costumes that stretched to twice their length when wet.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening with plenty of laughter and some nostalgia too.
June was thanked by Linda Kerr.
Our well-wisher, Beryl, gave us an update on members who had been ill.
We were glad to know that May is now home from hospital and progressing well.
Several events are taking place during the coming months and information was on display.
Tickets have been booked for a performance of The Sound of Music at the Lowry Theatre on December 16. A deposit of £10 is needed next month, orders for diaries have been taken.
The book club and walking group will meet as usual.
A walk around Daresbury should be enjoyable and hopefully the weather will be kind.
Members who had helped at the Cheshire Show were thanked.
The four entries were on display during the evening. They were all admired and members congratulated, especially Pauline, who scored first place with full marks for her water colour painting. Nina, Freda and Eve were all commended. A good result all round ladies.
Other evenings planned include: July 21, flower group; July 28, social evening.
We were pleased to welcome six visitors to our meeting and hope they will come again.
Meetings are held at the leisure/ community centre on Meeting Lane at 7.30pm.
The next meeting will be on August 3 when the speaker will be Judy Popley, who will talk about her life at Granada Studio, and all are welcome.
