A VETERINARY centre in Warrington has issued a warning to dog owners as cases of a potentially fatal disease are rising.
Birchwood Vets put out the warning on social media, urging pet owners to remain vigilant of rising cases of lungworm in the area.
There are now more than 120 reported cases of lungworm ina 50-mile radius of Warrington, which includes popular dog-walking spots such as the Peak District, as well as beaches including Formby and Crosby.
Taking to social media, Birchwood Vets said: "Lungworm is spreading! It is now found in many places across the UK.
"Lungworm can be potentially fatal to dogs, so it is important to ensure your dog is protected from this awful parasite!
"Ask us about ways to help prevent your dog from getting lungworm.

As per Medivet: "Lungworm is a type of parasitic worm that can infect dogs.
"Unlike other intestinal worms such as tapeworm and roundworm, adult lungworm travel around a dog's body and can damage their lungs and other major organs - causing fatal consequences if left untreated."
Dogs can develop lungworm through ingesting infected substances - creatures such as slugs and snails can carry lungworm, and therefore owners are urged to ensure their dog does not eat anything that could spread the parasite.
There have been six cases recorded in Warrington so far, with national case numbers rising in recent months.
Though the parasite can be fatal to dogs, treatment is available from veterinary centres, which include antiparasitic drugs.
According to Blue Cross, symptoms of lungworm in dogs include:
- Coughing
- Breathing problems
- Not wanting to exercise
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Weight loss
- If a dog gets a minor injury, like a small cut, it might bleed for longer
